Pipes & Profiles

Calcium carbonate is used in numerous rigid PVC applications. The most significant are: pipes and profiles. Omya is continuously updating its product range for these applications. Most recently Omya has developed an innovative solution to add calcium carbonate directly at the extruder, by-passing the dry blend mixing process.

Pipes & Fittings

Omya’s range of minerals for pipe applications is unparalleled and covers the entire spectrum of applications for pipes and fittings.

Polyolefin non-pressure pipes and fittings

The use of calcium carbonate concentrates in polyolefin pipes will result in higher stiffness, improved processing, reduced cooling time and cost reduction. In fittings, such concentrates significantly reduce cycle time and improve profitability.

PVC pressure pipes

Pressure pipes normally have low calcium carbonate loadings. In order for these pipes to withstand the highest pressure tests, ultra-fine and surface treated grades are strongly recommended. Omyalite® or Omyacarb® grades offer the optimal quality level for this demanding application.

PVC foam core pipes

Foam core pipes have gained increasing popularity as a high-quality yet cost-efficient solution for sewage applications. In order to ensure an excellent foam structure and good blowing agent dispersion, ultra fine and surface treated calcium carbonate are recommended. Based on its years of experience, Omya can recommend Omyalite® or Omyacarb® grades as the best solution.

PVC sewage pipes and fitting

In this application, too, quality raw materials are the key to success in the marketplace. High loadings can be achieved with the right product and the right process. Omyalite® or Omyacarb® grades provide the best solution. And when it comes to high loadings, in-line dosing of calcium carbonate should be considered as an option.

Profiles

Adding more Hydrocarb® to PVC profiles can yield substantial benefits.

By choosing the right calcium carbonate, the customer can improve impact strength, maximize pigment efficiency through better dispersion, optimize gloss levels, reduce plate-out, and improve the processing window. So, while for many people calcium carbonate is a filler, when it comes to profiles Omya likes to refer to our products as mineral modifiers.

Calcium carbonate can have a major influence on end-product properties, so selecting the right one - the one that has been used for over 25 years in the industry - is essential. With PVC window profiles typically sold with a long term guarantee, calcium carbonate is not the right raw material to compromise on.

To achieve cost savings, it is worth considering adding more of the right calcium carbonate. Omya’s ultra-fine surface treated products allow an increase in loadings to 10phr and above – with no compromise to product performances.

Hydrocarb® 95T has been the industry standard in Europe for over two decades. Hydrocarb® 95T is now available from several locations across the world, and Omya has expanded the line to even finer grades for superior gloss and impact strength.
