There is an ever-increasing demand for grease and oil resistant packaging materials – with today's altering consumer behavior, the actual number of 4 million tons for fat resistant paper and board qualities is ever increasing. Choosing a fiber-based, renewable raw material as basis for the packaging solution should be the first choice.
Challenges must be overcome in order to achieve a high-quality grease and oil resistance barrier. Besides high amounts of waxes to create the lipophilic character of the paper and board, fluorine compounds so-called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are typically used. Those components are prone to have a significant potential for being persistent, toxic and bioaccumulative – PBT and are called therefore also regarded as persistent organic pollutants (POP). In the US, the EPA's 2010/2015 Stewardship Program already tackles the perfluorinated hydrocarbons of C8 or greater whereas the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is considering similar regulations in the future. Besides a classification as substances of very high concern (SVHC), a restriction in use by 2021 and a total ban by 2025 in the member stated of the EU is to be expected. Other governments and players in the food market are planning the phase out of PFAS as well.
To avoid the use of oil-based waxes and PFAS is a clear goal of the industry – considering consumer safety and environment protection.
