PET calcium carbonate masterbatch

Omya has developed OmyaPET to facilitate the production of highly filled calcium carbonate masterbatch for use in PET processing.

Minimizing PET degradation by using OmyaPET in compounding

The presence of moisture and some additives degrades polyethylene terephthalate (PET) during extrusion.

For this reason, masterbatch manufacturers have avoided the use of calcium carbonate in PET masterbatches and compounds.

Since the launch of OmyaPET, it has been possible to take advantage of the unique benefits that calcium carbonate offers polymer processors.

These include strengthening the product, reducing costs, increasing opacity and reducing the carbon footprint.

An environmentally friendly OmyaPET solution for white bottles

White opaque PET bottles are considered more recyclable than white opaque HDPE bottles.

However, the high titanium dioxide content in single-layer bottles causes high costs and increased abrasion.

Thanks to the functionality of OmyaPET, both are improved in PET bottle production and the desired opacity for UHT milk bottles is achieved in the stretch blow molding process (SBM) with OmyaPET and the addition of a smaller amount of titanium dioxide.

OmyaPET for low density white opaque BOPET film

Due to its particle size, OmyaPET is an alternative to the more expensive precipitated barium sulfate in low density white opaque BOPET films.

Thanks to the lower density of OmyaPET and its excellent voiding properties, a significantly lower film density can be achieved in white opaque BOPET films.

Improved opacity of white PET masterbatch

OmyaPET improves the distribution of titanium dioxide particles in PET and increases opacity.

By replacing one part titanium dioxide with two parts OmyaPET, coloring costs can be reduced, and the carbon footprint improved.

Sustainability and reduced carbon footprint

OmyaPET has a significantly lower carbon footprint than PET and titanium dioxide, contributing to an overall reduction in the carbon footprint of the bottle.
