Milk in PET bottle

More sustainable and lower density BOPET film

Calcium carbonate has long been the material of choice to produce white opaque, low-density BOPP (biaxially oriented PP) films, but in BOPET (biaxially oriented PET) it did not meet the requirements of the more demanding BOPET production process.

With the invention of OmyaPET, a calcium carbonate for PET processing, it is now possible to produce white opaque BOPET films with a lower density than the films produced today with titanium dioxide and precipitated barium sulfate.

Replacing titanium dioxide in recyclable white PET bottles

White PET bottles are considered to be highly recyclable packaging for UHT milk and the market for them is growing rapidly. To achieve the high light barrier for extended shelf life, up to 10% titanium dioxide is required in a mono-layer bottle.

Thanks to OmyaPET, 50-70% of the titanium dioxide in mono-layer bottles can be replaced, but also in multi-layer bottles 30-50% of the titanium dioxide in the white layer covering the black UV barrier layer can be replaced.

A special process window for nucleating PET

OmyaPET is an excellent nucleator for crystallizing PET to achieve higher thermal stability and improved mechanical properties.

While thick-walled injection molded parts usually tend to warp when using mineral nucleators, OmyaPET improves dimensional stability.

During thermoforming, the sheets can be heated to higher temperatures than is possible with other mineral nucleators, extending the process window.

Improving the sustainability of white PET

OmyaPET is not only more cost-effective compared to titanium dioxide and precipitated barium sulfate, but as a natural material it also has a significantly lower carbon footprint, which improves the overall carbon footprint of white PET products.

Benefits of OmyaPET

  • Natural opacifier that meets the requirements for food contact
  • Reducing the need for titanium dioxide in UHT milk bottles
  • Higher productivity due to faster IR heating of PET bottle preforms
  • Replacement of precipitated barium sulfate in BOPET
  • Increasing the processing window for PET crystallization
  • Reduction of the overall carbon footprint
