FAQ for building and construction solutions

Omya offers a comprehensive portfolio of materials for building and construction, including functional minerals, supplementary cementitious materials, functional additives, pigments and colorants, flame retardants, resins, binders and reinforcement materials. The portfolio supports applications such as concrete, mortars, engineered wood as well as other building and construction applications.

Common functional minerals in Omya’s construction portfolio include ground calcium carbonate (GCC), precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), kaolin, closed-cell expanded perlite and hollow glass microspheres. Depending on the mineral and  formulation, they can help optimize properties such as mechanical performance, processing, density, thermal properties and cost-performance balance.

Omya’s construction portfolio includes glass powder and calcined clay as supplementary cementitious materials. Depending on the formulation, these materials can be used as partial cement replacements to support the performance and sustainability objectives of cementitious systems.

Omya supplies a range of functional additives for building and construction formulations including rheology modifiers, defoamers, surface modifiers, dispersants, wetting agents, stabilizers, fumed and colloidal silica and superplasticizers.

Omya's portfolio includes phosphorus-based flame retardant systems, brominated-based flame retardant system, antimony trioxide (ATO), aluminum hydroxide (ATH), magnesium hydroxide (MDH), as well as other synergists and smoke suppressants.

Lightweight fillers such as closed-cell expanded perlite and hollow glass microspheres can help reduce material density while supporting properties such as workability and thermal insulation. In Omya’s Omyasphere portfolio, lightweight fillers may also increase volume yield and help reduce transportation-related impacts through lower final product weight.

Yes. Omya supplies functional minerals, supplementary cementitious materials, lightweight fillers and specialty materials for dry mortar and concrete formulations. Depending on the formulation, these materials can help optimize properties such as flow, workability, mechanical performance and density.

Yes. Omya combines application expertise and technical capabilities to support customers with product selection, formulation and reformulation, laboratory analysis and implementation. This support is backed by technical laboratories and regional expertise.

Omya offers a broad portfolio of materials for building and construction, including functional minerals such as calcium carbonate and lightweight fillers. These minerals can support processing, formulation efficiency and performance across applications such as concrete, mortars, flooring, roofing and engineered wood.

Appropriately selected minerals can help formulators optimize properties such as rheology, processing, density, mechanical performance, dimensional stability and surface quality. Their effect depends on the mineral characteristics and the overall formulation.

Mineral solutions can support more sustainable construction materials by helping optimize formulations, improve resource efficiency, reduce material use or enable material substitution, depending on the application. Environmental benefits should be evaluated for the specific material system and its lifecycle.

Omya supports a broad range of construction applications, including concrete and cementitious systems, dry-mix mortars, flooring, roofing, and engineered wood, as well as other building-material formulations.

Mineral selection depends on the target performance, processing requirements and overall formulation. Factors such as mineralogy, particle-size distribution, morphology, surface characteristics and compatibility with other formulation components should be considered.
