The use of natural calcium carbonate also brings technical or processing benefits to food and beverage producers, acting as a texturizer, powder flow improver or as a carrier, for example. Our products are also used as a white pigment (E170), pH buffer, extrusion aid and for the reduction of acrylamide.

Omya has also developed a non-nano functionalized calcium carbonate that features high porosity, resulting in highly efficient anticaking, providing a competitive alternative to current solutions in the market.

FAQ

A variety of foods, including dairy products, contain naturally occurring calcium. However, dietary restrictions or preferences can reduce the intake of calcium below recommended levels.  Omya natural calcium carbonate is among the sources with the highest elemental calcium content, at 40%.  Additionally, the absorption of calcium can be influenced by factors such as other nutrients contained in the food. For example, calcium absorption can be enhanced by vitamin D3 and bone deposition by vitamin K2. 

While 99% of calcium is stored in the bones and teeth, small amounts circulate in the blood stream. Bones undergo a constant process of remodeling, causing a delicate balance between formation and resorption. Insufficient calcium supply can lead to lower bone density, causing osteoporosis, a disease which causes the bones to become brittle, porous and more prone to breakage.

 

Calcium is not only essential for healthy bones and teeth but is also required for vascular contraction and vasodilation, muscle function, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling and hormonal secretion, although less than 1% of total body calcium is needed to support these critical metabolic functions. 

Food grade ingredients meet food regulation standards. Omya’s natural calcium carbonate products meet international standards including E170, FCC, USP, EP and JP.  They are also Halal and Kosher certified.

The carbon footprint of natural calcium carbonate is one tenth of that of a precipitated calcium carbonate because no energy-demanding chemical processing is required to produce it.  Omya’s products replace less sustainable ingredients resulting in an overall lower carbon footprint of the end product.

Omya’s powder flow solutions help to solve problems in food processing such as low or no flow, or clumping, and they are less dusty than alternative products in the market. Omya products act in various food processes by improving machinability, reducing cooking time, improving product quality and shelf life.
